Essential Fats
Fats
and Oils are made up of building blocks called fatty acids.
Fats are metabolized by many different
compounds in our body. Fats that we cannot make ourselves are called
Essential Fatty Acid (EFA). We have to get these fats from our daily
diet.
There are
two main fats that are essential for every human being Linoleic acid (LA
or omega 6) and alpa Linolenic acid (LNA or omega 3)
These fats are essential for circulation, blood
production, skin function, recovery from fatigue, hormones
synthesis, growth, cell division, brain development ,immune function and
anti -inflammatory responses.
If they are not consumed in the proper proportion, or if we do not get
enough of other essential nutrients that assist in their metabolism,
deficiency symptoms will appear.
Some researchers have suggested that many of the symptoms of
degenerative diseases (e.g. heart disease and cancer) are due to
deficiency of one or both of these types of essential fatty acids.
Linoleic Acid (Omega 6) is found in safflower, sunflower, hemp, walnut,
pumpkin, sesame oils, nuts and seeds, and wheat germ.
Linolenic Acid (Omega 3) is found in flax, hemp and walnut oils; nuts
and seeds, wheat germ and dark green leafy vegetables. Its derivatives
Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) and Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA), are found
in fatty fish oils such as salmon, mackerel, trout, and sardines.
Linolenic Acid (Omega 3) can lower triglycerides and protect the good
cholesterol (HDL carries cholesterol out of the body). Omega 3 can
retard the formation of blood clots in the arteries, help to control
blood pressure, and has been shown to have an anti-tumor role in some
cases.
